ABSTRACT

Objectives/Scope: Kuwait Energy is exploring, developing, and operating four concessions located in the Western Desert and the Gulf of Suez in Egypt;the company implemented many projects that had a significant impact on saving operating expenses and reducing greenhouse emissions to preserve the environment. One of these recent executed projects was replacing scattered diesel generators with a Central gas-driven electric power grid in Al- Jahraa field in East Abu-Sennan concession. In this , we present the challenges we faced during the planning phase and execution strategy applied to overcome these challenges. Methods: Al-Jahraa Field includes 13 running wells, a waterflood station, and a main oil and gas production plant. The field electricity is supplied by 15 scattered diesel generators for wells and facilities, consuming 100,000 liters of diesel per month. During the feasibility study phase of the project, many challenges were faced which had a negative impact on the project's economical assessment and that would result in cancelling the project, the challenges were summarized as following;the existence of wells at long distances from the site of the proposed main power station, which would require extending long lengths of electric power cables at a high cost, also the expected delay in the implementation and commissioning of the project resulting from the long delivery time of materials, especially copper cables and main switchgear during the COVID-19 pandemic. Several scenarios were studied for connecting the wells to the power station: The first scenario was to connect all wells and field facilities directly to the main power station. In this case, the estimated power cable lengths required to be extended were 25,000 Mt, in addition to using two 1 MW generators, one in service and the other would be a standby generator to provide backup power during a repair or maintenance service. This option economic model showed negative NPV due to the high cost of cables and extended execution time. Therefore, this option was cancelled. The second alternative was to connect each group of wells to three power stations to be operated using three diesel generators of 500 kVA for each station, with three backup generators. But the implementation of this option would lead to saving the cost of copper cables by 50%, but the cost of purchasing generators would increase due to the increase in the number of stations accordingly, in addition to the increase in operating expenses resulting from the increase in fuel consumption and maintenance cost compared to the first option. The third alternative, in which the economics of the project proved to be the best, is to divide the wells into three groups. Each of the two remote groups of wells are connected to an electric distribution panel, and then the two panels are connected by a main cable to the main power station. Moreover, the project cost was reduced by 50% due to the implementation of the following innovative optimization approach: • Re-using ESP cables instead of copper cables optimized both cost and delivery time as these materials are pulled from ESP wells. • These cables are designed for harsh downhole conditions increases its durability and extends its lifetime. • Using step-up and step-down transformers enabled us to reduce cable sizing, which also reflected on the lower cost of the project and, accordingly, increased its feasibility to be constructed. • An Incremental development approach, was followed in the management and implementation of the project, led to the speed of project delivery, and reduced the project risks and uncertainties. Results: The project was completed and commissioned within the allocated budget and time frame, leading to: ◦ 100% reduction of diesel fuel consumption levels. ◦ +68% reduction in total emissions;emissions are reduced by 2.5tons per year on average. ◦ reduced operational costs for each kilowatt hour generated due to using associated gas as fuel and releasing 13 rental generators. ◦ With the replacement of 1 rental generators with just one, the amount of maintenance waste, such as batteries, used oil, oil filters, fuel filters, and so on, is significantly reduced. ◦ These projects showed positive economic indicators (+NPV), with less than 1 years of payback. Conclusion: From this project's planning, execution, and results, we can claim that if risk assessments, detailed scope of work, good resource and time management, and cost-effective choices were addressed carefully, shall result in outstanding performance. The design of a high-efficiency electrical power supply system and use of associated gas in power generation reduces levels of fuel consumption, GHG emissions, and operational costs. Power generation project is a repeated case performed in one of our own assets in Egypt due to positive results and are easily transferable to sister IOCs & NOCs. ABSTRACT

Spare parts play an important role in supporting capital goods maintenance, contributing to downtime reduction and lifetime extension. However, once systems are becoming more and more advanced, and their reliability has also increased, both trends enlarged the amount of components with low demand, and spare parts management are becoming more complicated. Consequently, given the mindset change about delivery times with Covid-19 pandemic and the concern related to global spending in aftersales services, together with customers demanding high uptime levels and TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) reduction, the search for more efficient methods to manage spare parts inventory has emerged. Based on the use of industry 4.0 techniques, the aim of this study is to propose a framework for spare parts provisioning, reducing both maintenance and downtime costs. ABSTRACT

Last-mile delivery services have become ubiquitous in the recent past. Delivery services for food (eg., DoorDash, Grubhub, Uber Eats) and groceries (eg., Instacart, Cornershop) earned a combined revenue of $25B in 2020, and are expected to exceed $72B in revenues by 2025. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the growth of such services by making their value proposition even more attractive. The lower risk of contact coupled with the convenience of ordering from the comfort of their homes led to widespread customer adoption. Even so, most last-mile delivery services are not profitable. The high cost of delivery is cited as the major cause of losses. Thus, analyzing the factors influencing delivery costs is crucial for understanding the long-term viability of these services. The pooling of orders is a critical source of efficiency in last-mile delivery. We propose a queuing-based spatial model for the delivery process to analyze the value created by pooling. We demonstrate how the trade-off between delivery times and the cost of delivery, mediated by the extent of pooling, dictates which services will be economically viable. Our simulation study of a typical grocery delivery service in Los Angeles, California suggests that delivery times of less than 1 hour are unprofitable for most regions in the US. We find that driver wages account for 90% of the delivery cost. We also discuss the potential impact of technological innovations such as automated delivery and labor regulations on the profitability of last-mile delivery services. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The covid-19 pandemic accelerated many digital transformations in Brazil and the world, and one of them was online shopping, which already had an upward trend in revenue and grew even more from 2020 onwards due to the social isolation actions as a way as how to contain the spread of coronavirus. This above-expected increase directly impacted the value and time delivery of online purchases. It is relevant, in this moment of advanced vaccination and return of presidential economic activities, to study whether the dynamics of online shopping tend to remain constant. To characterize the online purchase behavior of Brazilian consumers throughout the pandemic and their intentions of online shopping in the post-pandemic future, as well as their perceptions about the shipping prices and delivery time, questionnaires, were applied to e-shoppers from Brazil. Information was collected regarding the profile of the sample, the isolation situation in the face of the pandemic, the online purchase behavior during the period, and their perceptions about the freight changes. The results indicate that part of the changes in online shopping that occurred during the period of the covid-19 pandemic should remain in the post-pandemic scenario. They also indicate that there is a perception that the shipping prices has increased and that the delivery time has decreased during this period. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

The increasing number of food delivery riders (p-Hailing) in Malaysia has been recorded since COVID-19 took place. P-hailing riders are usually exposed to long hours in traffic and are more prone to get involved in traffic accidents. This matter has been one of the pressing problems in the transportation industry. This study focused on assessing the contributing factors of traffic accidents involving p-Hailing riders and determining the perception of p-Hailing riders towards the delivery time frame with regards to traffic accident involvement. A qualitative approach was used, and face-To-face/online interviews were conducted among p-hailing riders in Shah Alam, Selangor. Thematic and descriptive analyses were adopted, and it was found that several factors such as red light running, speeding and slippery roads were the factors of traffic accidents among p-Hailing riders. Delivery time frame did not have much impact on rider's accident cases;instead, it was the behavior of the rider itself. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Global supply chains have reached critical capacity, resulting in escalating prices, long delivery times, and has had a crippling effect on manufacturing, health care, agriculture, and commerce in general. In addition, the cascading effects of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as other intra-supply chain problems have resulted in a 40-year high inflation and degradations in quality of life, employment, GNP, and personal and national security. During the pandemic, shortages in the workforce and all transportation carrier modes forced the acceleration of digitally powered solutions for capacity improvements. At the same time, emerging technologies in autonomy, electrification, fuel cells, and low carbon powerplants are pushing the envelope of OEM development for over-the-road trucks, aircraft, and maritime vessels. These new transportation modes offer clean, low noise, and high safety operations, which promise to move people and goods faster, cleaner, and ultimately more affordably between origin and destination. This paper provides an overview of general logistics issues that can assist VTOL designers and operators in determining critical configuration parameters, location demographics, flight operations, and emerging Aircraft On Ground (AOG) technologies to maximize near-term ROI for transformative VTOL aircraft. ABSTRACT

Since COVID-19 was declared as a pandemic by World Health Organization in March 2020, 169,682,828 cases have been reported worldwide, with 151,416,570 recovered, and 3,526,647 deaths by May 28, 2021. Oxygen gas cylinders demand is booming globally due to its need for COVID-19's for intensive care. Thus, it is critical for hospitals to know exactly the time of receiving oxygen gas cylinders since this will help in minimizing the fatality rate. In this regards, this paper proposes a Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network-based model to predict the delivery time of oxygen gas cylinders for a real-life logistics data from a company that delivers oxygen gas cylinders to all cities around Saudi Arabia. Besides, Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network is benchmarked to supported vector machine and multiple linear regression. Although all the considered models have the ability to provide accurate prediction results, the findings indicate that the proposed supported vector machine and Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network model provide better prediction results. The analysis was achieved through a methodology to identify factors with the highest impact and build a neural network model. The model was further optimized to identify the best order and select the best subset of input variables. The analysis showed that the neural network model can be used effectively to estimate the delivery time of oxygen gas cylinders. The model illustrated high accuracy of prediction by comparing the predicted values to the actual values.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic changed education by disrupting activities and interactions among all stakeholders. However, this event also opened new possibilities, as in higher education, to explore the future implications of the pandemic for learning purposes. One possibility is about the study of supply chains where delivery times and product quality were affected during the sanitary emergency. One essential category of goods strongly affected is food concerning availability, accessibility, and affordability because of physical limitations, mandatory ordinances, or deficient infrastructure. This situation interrupted supply chains affecting food provision and procurement across different social groups and locations, especially in disadvantaged or poor communities or countries. Accordingly, this work explores, from the perspective of Industrial Engineering education, the effects of the pandemic on food supply as relevant learning experiences about relevant contemporary issues. Learning experiences can refer to present difficulties in food supply during the pandemic;however, other possibilities might exist to improve food security in the future. Thus, a study of the pandemic situation in Latin America has been implemented about food supply. An online survey using internet social networks helped to collect data about people's profiles, consumption preferences, and shifts in food demand and supply over the pandemic in the two main conurbations of Mexico and Bolivia. Data analysis studied the impact on distinct age groups, locations, and income levels. Results explore consequences in the food provision because of increasing delivery times, shortages, and price rises. These findings can help to conceptualize learning experiences to strengthen food security in urban areas. © 2021 IISE Annual Conference and Expo 2021. All rights reserved.
